Momentum. It's not always in the direction you think.

I got wise words in-person from THE James Clear (of bestseller Atomic Habits) this past weekend!

He was keynote speaker at a health convention I was at. (You may already know I've been on a health journey since March of 2022.)

There were some incredible takeaways that I want to share with you from hanging out with all my healthy people this weekend.

(And if you're not on a health journey, no worries, these'll totally still apply...)

(⬇️ Btw, you can watch instead of reading, or read on below. ⬇️)

Momentum. It's not always in the direction you think.

One of the things I heard was:

Momentum will carry you forward...OR backwards.

🤯

(With that in mind, which direction is your momentum herding you right now?)

Something else that expert habit-whisperer James Clear shared:

A habit has to be established before it can be improved.

So if we know...

1) Momentum can carry us forward or backwards, and

2) A habit has to be established before it can be improved

that means...

Some of the things in our life we don't have habits around, might be carrying us in a direction we don't want.

Or they might not be carrying us where we think they're carrying us.

Audit-time

With these a-ha's in mind, I've been so excited to come back and do an audit of:

❓ What are some of my habits?

❓ How do I show up?

❓ What are some things I'm doing that might be taking me in a different direction than I want to go?

So I'm encouraging you to do the same because we're doing life together, right? Sit down, have a think, and take some inventory.

(Also, there's another thing I want to share with you. It's a big goal and I'm asking you to ask me how I'm doing with it...)

Something else James Clear said when he was on stage was

Sometimes we're so focused on optimizing, we forget to show up and start doing things.

We forget to do any of it, right? We sit on the sidelines and theorize, but we get so focused on that, that we fail to show up.

So confession-time...

I've been failing to show up for myself in the area of health as well as I was at one time.

So I have a goal to release another 25 pounds by October 5th.

And I have to be honest when I say this: I've already released those same 25 pounds before. But they've crept back on.

(You might be going, "Dude, that's a lot." I know! But it's not all the pounds I've released. 90 in total, with 25 creeping back on.)

Momentum can carry you backwards, right? There it is in action.

So 25 pounds by October 5th...because on October 6th, my trainer has challenged me to do the Missouri Cowbell 5K.

So we both know we're here doing life together. A couple things I'm asking of you today:

1) If you're ready to get into FORWARD momentum, check out the class I have coming up on August 20th. I'd love to talk with you about your habits and goals, and be a second (unbiased!) set of eyes to make sure you're headed in the direction you want to be. (And help you figure out what to do if you're not.)

2) I want to invite you to ask me how's it going with my health journey! How am I doing? How am I moving? How am I fueling my body? How am I showing up for hydration? How am I showing up with my sleep? You can ask me any of those questions.

Because that's how I'm going to release these 25 pounds again! (And then never again, just so we're clear.) By doing life with you.

Have a blessed day,
Dawn

PS - Let's get together in-person! Either at my August 20th class, or if you think it'd be fun to do the Missouri Cowbell together on October 6th (or both!)

Stop treating future tasks as immediate priorities
Ever felt like you have 47 open tabs running in your brain, all demanding your full attention at the same time?  If so, you're in good company. Almost every leader and business professional I’ve spoken with over the last few weeks is feeling that same mental drag.  I compare this to being an air traffic controller. (Instead of 47 tabs, those are 47 planes in the air.) Air traffic controllers st...
Are you stuck in "Ready, Aim, Aim, Aim" mode?
Do you find yourself endlessly tweaking projects? Or waiting for the "perfect" time to launch a new initiative? Or over-analyzing a decision until you are completely paralyzed? You've no doubt heard the phrase "Ready, Aim, Fire" before. But a lot of us often fall into a different pattern. We get so focused on getting it exactly right that we end up stuck in "Ready, Aim, Aim, Aim" mode. We keep ...
Don't wait until January to start dreaming
I know, I know—we just moved into the second half of this year, and here I am asking if you're ready for next year. (Bear with me for a second.) Before you keep scrolling, I want to invite you to do a quick exercise right now. Get out a clean piece of paper and write the next few years across the top—2027, 2028, 2029. Now, start jotting down what you’d like to accomplish in those years. What ne...
