I’m sure you’ve not wanted to do something before. You know…you wake up, and you dread doing the thing. You make a million excuses why you shouldn’t do the thing. And then you talk yourself out of doing the thing, right?

Even when it’s in your best interest.

Even when it’s maybe something you actually enjoy doing (once you’re actually doing it, that is).

Sometimes, in ‘the before’, your brain just doesn’t want to cooperate.😅

Anyway, this exact scenario’s been popping up in my world a bit recently, so I’m here to unpack it with you.

When I recorded the video below, I was dressed to go to the gym…but it was later in the day than I’d normally go. And there was a reason for that…

(⬇️ Btw, you can watch instead of reading, or read on below. ⬇️)

To make a long story short, in the weeks prior, I’d been waking up really not feeling like going to the gym. So my schedule and routine was getting out of whack.

But I just wasn’t feeling it. So I’d increasingly honor that feeling, and give myself a break. (Which is okay to do now and then.)

But then, I was challenged by my trainer.

Pregame Thoughts

He was like, “Dawn, that’s just called ‘pregame’. Of course you wake up and feel like ‘I don’t want to go to the gym’. So does every other person going to the gym.”

That’s right. Even if you’re excited about doing something, our initial gut response is often “Yeah, I don’t want to do that.”

So what to do?

Instead of honoring that feeling, look at it and go “Okay, it’s good that I’m feeling that, because that’s just part of my pregame routine.”

“I don’t want to go to the gym” means “Okay, this is just part of going to the gym.”

So instead of giving in to those feelings, you just accept it as a part of your pregame routine.

  • Don’t wanna make those phone calls? That’s just pregame thoughts.
  • Don’t wanna write that blog post? That’s just pregame thoughts.
  • Don’t wanna unclutter the garage? That’s just pregame thoughts.
  • Don’t wanna stop what you’re doing for a 20-minute walk break? That’s just pregame thoughts.

Just because you have pregame thoughts, doesn’t mean you’re going to skip out on the game, right?

You know how else to push through pregame thoughts to the other side? Build into the pregame concept by preparing for the big game (i.e. removing as many barriers as you you can). Like making sure…

  • Your clothes are out so you don’t have to bump around in the dark while people are sleeping
  • Your water bottle is filled up and your fuel is out
  • Your playlist is on point

So I’m here today to ask you, where in your life or business are you having pregame thoughts? Thoughts that you’re allowing to be in the driver’s seat. Thoughts that might not actually be the best indicators of things you should (or shouldn’t) be taking action on.

And then, where can you remove the other friction that’s stopping you, so you can run in the direction of your dreams?

Love doing life with you,

Dawn
